Phroth - Penn State's Humor Magazine
During my time at Penn State’s humor publication, Phroth, I fulfilled many roles within the organization. By the end of my first year, I went from Staff Writer to Lead Designer to Head Writer. Out of my five years with Phroth, I was Editor-in-Chief for two. Each year I oversaw or helped facilitate the writing, production, and distribution of 5,000 magazines and 20,000 newspapers each year.
Even as my position became more of an administrative role, I wrote and edited many articles and designed pages for all of our publications in Adobe Photoshop and InDesign. Through my leadership and comedic design philosophy, our output and and content greatly improved. I helped create a website for our publication, spread our content into other mediums (brochures, public events), and I brought in professional comedians and workshops to Penn State to improve the quality of our writing.
On this page, you can see several of our more recent examples of our work. As much as I’d like to take full credit for everything here, I’m proud to say it was a group effort to put everything together. You can find more examples of Phroth on their website.
Harrisburg Improv Theater
The Harrisburg Improv Theater (HIT) is a successful performing arts center in Midtown Harrisburg, home to many long-form improv teams and comedy classes. During my internship here, I ran their social media pages. To the right, you can see a few examples of my original work to promote special events and shows at the theater. I posted at least one of these each week and made original graphics for each team performing on a given night.
Along with those responsibilities, I teched their shows (every Saturday and Friday nights), assisted in their Sketch Comedy Video class, and engaged with improv classes. Each promotional piece of material connected in come way to the shows happening that night, whether it was through theming or jokes made from previous performances.
Penn State's Lady Lion Basketball Team
My internship with the Lady Lions Basketball Team was very engaging. I was able to get to know players and create promotional material to recruit more players to the team for the following school year.
My work typically involved me creating flyers, cards, and graphics to mail (physically or digitally) to high school basketball players to encourage them to join Penn State’s team.
Comedy Shows & Festivals
Due to my leadership positions in the comedy organizations at Penn State like Full Ammo Improv and Second Floor Stand-up, I was responsible for creating and marketing promotional material for our weekly shows and annual festivals. These are a few examples of posters that I made myself.
